Driver, 13 Students Hurt In Greenwich, Conn. School Bus Crash

GREENWICH, Conn. (CBSNewYork) -- Thirteen high school students and a driver were injured Wednesday, when a school bus went out of control and hit a tree in Greenwich, Connecticut.

The school bus, owned and operated by the Stanwich School of Greenwich, was headed north on Stanwich Road Wednesday afternoon with the 13 students aboard, according to a news release from the school.

The bus was traveling between the Stamford campus of the Stanwich School to the Lower School campus at 257 Stanwich Rd. in Greenwich, the release said.

For reasons yet to be determined, the bus driver swerved across the road and struck a large tree on the west side of the road, the release said. The collision brought the bus to a near dead halt, the release said.

No other vehicles were involved.

The force of the collision left the 74-year-old bus driver with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. The students on the vehicle were all hurt – with injuries ranging from bumps, bruises and bloody noses, to broken bones, the release said.

The students were taken either to the Greenwich Hospital emergency room, or the Stamford Hospital emergency room. Their exact conditions were not specified.

Parents were notified by the head of the school and hospital staff.
