Ribbon Cut On New DREAM Charter School In East Harlem

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- With Wynton Marsalis on the trumpet, DREAM Charter School sounded the news and cut the ribbon on their new school building in East Harlem on Thursday.

"Welcome to this amazing, amazing home," said Harlem RBI Director Rich Berlin, whose organization operates the school.

Yankees First Baseman Mark Teixeira was among the many VIPs on hand for the ribbon-cutting ceremony at the 143,000-square-foot building, located at 1991 Second Ave.

"We believe in each other. We have a goal in mind. Everyone thought we were crazy, and just like we tell our kids, don't think that these dreams are unattainable," said Teixeira, who helped fund the building.

"It's a beautiful building. They have nice teachers," said Nancy, who has four grandchildren at the school. "I love it. I love everything about it."

The students had been sharing space at P.S. 38 across the street.

"When they were doing their production for 'Annie,' it was a little hard for them as far as their practice space because they were in someone else's building," Nancy said.

Now, the school has a sparkling new gym and a state-of-the-art playground outside, and the facility also has a residential building with 90 apartments next door.

It is the neighborhood's first new public school building in 30 years.
