Police: Man Tried To Rape Woman In Downtown Manhattan Building

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police late Friday were searching for a suspect who tried to rape a woman in a downtown Manhattan apartment building.

Around 1 a.m. Friday, the 62-year-old woman was in the rear lobby of her building in the 5th Precinct – which includes parts of SoHo, NoLIta, Chinatown and Two Bridges. Police did not specify the address of the building.

The suspect approached the woman and attempted to rape her, police said. The victim fended the suspect off and he fled, police said.

The victim refused medical attention at the scene, police said.

The suspect was described as a Hispanic male between 20 and 30 years old, standing 5 feet 5 to 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighing 150 to 170 pounds. He was wearing what appeared to be a leather jacket with the Batman symbol on it, police said.
