Police: Homeless Man Arrested In Downtown Manhattan Attempted Rape

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police have arrested a homeless man who they said tried to rape a woman in a downtown Manhattan apartment building.

Authorities said a 62-year-old woman was in the rear lobby of her building Friday around 1 a.m. when the suspect, identified as 31-year-old Rubicel Sanchez, approached her and attempted to rape her.

Police said the woman fought Sanchez off and he fled the scene. The victim refused medical attention, police said.

Authorities released surveillance video of the suspect, who could be seen wearing a black leather jacket with the Batman symbol on it.

Hours later, around 9:15 p.m., officials said two police officers spotted Sanchez as he urinated on the street near 62 East Broadway. Officers Daniel Roth and Frank Faber placed Sanchez under arrest at that time, police said.

Sanchez, who police said is homeless, is charged with burglary and sex abuse.
