Trump Endorsed By NRA, Says He'll 'Unsign' Obama's Executive Orders On Firearms Immediately

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- More big guns are now backing Donald Trump.

The National Rifle Association is endorsing the billionaire businessman for president.

Chris Cox, the executive director of the NRA's political arm, announced the endorsement ahead of Trump's appearance at the group's convention.

Added NRA President Wayne LaPierre: "The revolution to take America back starts here."

Trump called the endorsement a "fantastic honor'' and said he would not let NRA members down.

Trump also told the crowd he would "unsign" President Barack Obama's executive orders on firearms "the first hour I am in office."

To an applause, he added that he plans to get rid of gun-free zones.

Cox focused most of his remarks on likely Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, calling her a threat to gun owners. He said that with the next president likely to having a Supreme Court vacancy to fill, "the Second Amendment is on the ballot this November.''

Cox also appealed to NRA members who may have preferred other candidates to Trump. He said, "It's time to get over it.''

The endorsement could help Trump shore up divisions among conservatives in the GOP, CBS2's Dick Brennan reported.

And on Friday, he made a blatant appeal to women.

"My poll numbers with men are through the roof, but I like women much more than men," he said. ""Come on, women, let's go! Come on!"

He also once again attacked Clinton, a day after she said he wasn't qualified to be president."

Meanwhile, former President Bill Clinton was on the campaign trail in South Dakota, stumping for his wife.

"I sometimes feel that I'm totally useless in this election season because I'm a happy grandfather. I'm not mad at anybody," he said.

But Trump has unloaded on the former president about his past scandals.

Bill Clinton ducked questions about whose qualified to be president and campaign attacks.

"I trust the American people," he said. "It's obvious what's going on . I think they'll figure it out."

Trump wants Clinton to name people should we nominate to the Supreme Court like he did this week. Clinton supporters point out she backs a vote for Obama's current nominee, Merrick Garland.
