Don Bosco Prep In Mourning After Death Of Former Athlete, Kurt Schmitz

RAMSEY, N.J. (CBSNewYork) - The football family at Don Bosco Prep in Ramsey, New Jersey, after the death of a former player over the weekend at an off-campus apartment at the University of Richmond.

Kurt Schmitz's former coach at Don Bosco, Greg Toal, says he was one of the hardest workers that ever came through his program.

"He wrestled and played football, he was the kind of guy who worked for everything he recieved," Toal said.

Schmitz went on to get a scholarship from the University of Richmond, but four concussions cut short his career after just two years.

As WCBS 880's Marla Diamond reported, Schmitz remained on the sidelines, helping his teammates avoid a similar fate.

At his old high school just this season, players received helmet sensors to alert coaches of hard hits.
