Moms March Against Domestic Violence On Mother's Day
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- There was a Mother's Day march with a message supported by Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer on Sunday.
"Talking about domestic violence, and bringing it up on Mother's Day is really important," Brewer told 1010 WINS' Derricke Dennis.
The fourth-annual Brooklyn Bridge Mother's Day walk was founded by Dawn Diaz on behalf of her late mother and other victims of domestic violence.
"She never had freedom," Diaz said. "She never had her own life. She never knew who she was.
"Whey my mom was finally able to leave the situation, she died in an accident six months later."
One mother said she hopes her own children will pass down the message that victims can take a stand against abuse.
"Women who've been through a lot are not victims," Brewer said. "We're strong. We have families. We have to be strong for our families. And all these women here are contributing a great deal just by being here today."
