Dog Remains Found In Roosevelt Preserve On Long Island

ROOSEVELT, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Authorities are investigating a gruesome find on Long Island.

A passerby discovered a dog skull in a wooded area at the Roosevelt Preserve just east of Prospect Street on Monday.

Investigators then found more dog remains in various stages of decomposition strewn about the ground inside plastic bags, police said.

Nearby residents are concerned and keeping a close watch on their pets.

"Probably some form of ritual... it could be voodoo or something along the lines of that," one man said. "It needs to be stopped."

Nassau County police, the Nassau County District Attorney Animal Crimes Investigators and the Town of Hempstead Animal Control Division are investigating.

A $5,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to an arrest, WCBS 880's Mike Xirinachs reported.

Detectives request anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-Tips.
