Dog Found In Bergen County Under Sign Reading, 'Abandoned'

CLOSTER, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Animal welfare advocates were outraged Tuesday night, after a dog was found tied up and abandoned in Bergen County, New Jersey.

Rescuers called the dog Oreo. He was in good health Tuesday night, despite being dumped at a ballfield in Closter.

A pet rescuer said Oreo was tied to a light pole, under a handmade sign reading, "Abandoned."

"It's not OK to do something like this, whether it's a dog or a child," said Robyn Urman of Pet ResQ. Inc. "Man up. You own an animal. It's a lifetime commitment."

If Oreo is not claimed by Friday, he will be offered for adoption by a loving home.

Meanwhile, abandoning a domesticated animal is illegal in New Jersey, and police have launched an investigation.
