Dog Bites, Injures Police Horse Near Stationhouse In East New York, Brooklyn

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A dog bit and injured a police horse Wednesday near the 75th Precinct station in East New York, Brooklyn, the NYPD said.

Around 12:47 p.m., Officer Luis Ramos and his horse, Pompey II, were headed to the police station at 1000 Sutter Ave. Just around the corner near 490 Essex St., a pit bull charged at the stallion and bit him in the right chest and inner left leg, police said.

The horse suffered puncture wounds and abrasions from the bite, police said.

Officer Ramos was able to control the horse during the attack to ensure the dog did not get in front of the horse, police said.

A second mounted officer, Laurene Bove, saws the dog attack and came to Ramos' assistance with her horse, Limerick, police said. The dog then ran back into a yard at 490 Essex St., police said.

The owner of the dog was found and secured the animal without incident, police said. The dog was taken to the Center for Animal Care and Control on Linden Boulevard in Brooklyn, pending further investigation, police said.

Pompey II was taken back to the Troop E stable on Brighton 3rd Street in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn, where he will be treated by a veterinarian, police said.

Police said Pompey II will fully recover after a few days' rest, and will receive a few extra apples and carrots.
