Distraught Queens Family Struggles To Cope With Infant's Death

NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- A distraught family is relying on their community to cope with the death of an infant.

Police said that 11-month-old Kiam Felix was smothered to death last week by his own mother.

During a vigil in Elmhurst, Queens on Sunday, the family lit candles and prayed. It was the first time that the baby's father appeared in public.

Both sides of the family were left struggling to understand how this happened.

"It's all mixed up inside. I mean it's my grandson, our family has been through a lot," the boy's grandfather said, "She was happy, he was happy. There was nothing to indicate something like this would happen."

Police said that the boy's mother told investigators she did not want the baby anymore.
