Disguised NJ Bank Robbery Suspect Busted After Talking To Cops
WESTVILLE, N.J. (CBSNewYork) - A New Jersey bank robbery suspect is accused of being a little too smart for his own good.
As WCBS 880's Levon Putney reported, a man who'd allegedly held up a 1st Colonial National Bank in Westville on Wednesday afternoon went home afterwards and tried to change his appearance.
"He really did a good job disguising himself," Westville Police Chief Bill Whinna told Putney. "We were laughing about it at the end."
Police said 33-year old Michael Morgan handed a note to a teller demanding money and made off with $900. Cops searched the area on foot armed with a surveillance image of the robber.
"Since he made it home, he shaved his beard, threw the clothes in the trash can and took the dog for a walk," said Whinna. "Clean-shaven guy, walking a dog said 'hey, can I help?'"
The chief said the cop showed Morgan a picture of the robbery suspect and Morgan replied he'd call 911 if he spotted him.
But Morgan lives nearby and neighbors recognized him - with and without the beard and puffy clothes.
"He was taken into custody and started cooperating right away," said the police chief.
Whinna said a search warrant turned up half the stolen money, the clothes he wore in the robbery and shaven beard hairs.
