Demonstrators Hit Bushwick Streets To Demand Crackdown On Notorious Landlord

NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- Hundreds of people marched through the Bushwick section of Brooklyn on Sunday, to protest conditions in buildings owned by Joel Israel.

Demonstrators claimed that Israel has destroyed rent-controlled apartments in order to scare away tenants.

The group demanded that the De Blasio administration enforce laws on affordable housing so that regular people aren't chased out of neighborhoods.

"It's bordering on criminal action and that's why he should be brought to bear by the city of New York and should be brought up on charges," one demonstrator said.

The event was organized by the groups 'Make The Road New York' and 'Real Affordability For All', 1010 WINS reported. The groups are campaigning to preserve and create affordable housing for low and moderate income New Yorkers.

Israel was in court for much of last week defending himself against charges that he has been destroying his own properties.
