NY Man Guilty Of Manslaughter In Killing Of Accused Rapist

GOSHEN, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- An upstate New York man has been found guilty in the fatal shooting of an accused rapist he was trying to turn in to police.

A jury on Monday found 46-year-old David Carlson guilty of first-degree manslaughter after it deliberated for more than seven days.

Carlson's bail was raised to $500,000 bond over $250,000 cash and he was remanded, authorities said. He is set to be sentenced in January and faces up to 25 years in prison.

Carlson claims he fired in self-defense in October 2013 as he held Norris Acosta-Sanchez at gunpoint so a neighbor could call police.

Acosta-Sanchez was wanted for sex with an underage girl and was the object of a futile police manhunt in the woods near Carlson's home the day before. Carlson claims that the fugitive lunged at him before the shooting.

Prosecutors said Carlson was the aggressor. Supporters of Carlson say he's more a victim than a vigilante.

Carlson faced charges including second-degree murder and first-degree manslaughter.
