Dance, Music Help Start Week-Long Celebration Of Kwanzaa

NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- The principle of 'unity' was celebrated on Friday night, the first day of Kwanzaa.

Dance and music helped kick off the week-long festivities at the African Burial Ground in lower Manhattan.

Kwanzaa means 'first fruits of the harvest.'

There is a candle lighting ceremony each night highlighting seven core principles.

Dr. Maulana Karenga founded the holiday in 1966 in response to the Watts riots in Los Angeles.
