D-Day Vet Gets New Jersey High School Diploma

LINDEN, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A D-Day veteran who missed his high school graduation was among the graduates at a New Jersey high school.

Herman Zeitchik didn't walk with his Linden High School class in 1944.

"Seventy-two years ago I was drafted into the Army and I missed my graduation," Zeitchik said. "Now I am back at Linden High School feeling so blessed."

The 90-year-old Silver Spring, Maryland, resident was at a Memorial Day event in Washington, D.C. where he met music teacher Matt Lorenzetti and told him about growing up in New Jersey, playing clarinet in the band and singing in the school choir.

Lorenzetti researched and found Zeitchik in old yearbooks, and the school invited him back to receive an honorary diploma during Friday's ceremony.

"Who said you can never go home, I just did," Zeitchik said. "You never know where life is going to take you."
