Long Island CVS Store Manager Saves Elderly Woman From Scam

GLEN COVE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- An alert store manager kept an elderly customer from getting scammed, police on Long Island said.

The 85-year old grandmother bought gift cards worth $1,500 from a CVS Pharmacy in Glen Cove last month.

The woman said she had received a call from someone claiming to be an attorney needing the money to free her grandson from jail.

But the manager convinced the customer that the request seemed highly suspicious.

"She went home and found out her grandson was not in jail and thank God, she didn't display the cards to the caller," Lt. John Nagle, of the Glen Cove Police Department, said.

The pharmacy refunded the money.

Police are still trying to track down the scammer.
