Cut By Texans, Safety Stevie Brown Quickly Re-Signs With Giants

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The Giants' desperately needed help in their secondary. Stevie Brown suddenly found himself without a job.

The simple math worked out Monday as Big Blue announced it had re-signed the veteran safety, who played for the Giants from 2012-14.

To make room on the roster, the Giants cut linebacker Victor Butler.

Brown had his breakout season with the Giants in 2012, registering 76 tackles and eight interceptions, one off the league lead. However, he suffered a torn ACL in the preseason the following year and wasn't the same player when he finally returned in 2014, recording just 38 tackles and no interceptions.

The 28-year-old former seventh-round pick of the Oakland Raiders in 2010 signed with the Houston Texans in May, but couldn't get off the roster bubble and was released on Saturday.

Brown may not be the player he once was but with the regular season opener fast approaching the Giants didn't really have time to shop around. They have lost four safeties in the last two weeks, including season-ending injuries to Bennett Jackson, Mykkele Thompson and Justin Currie.

Brown is expected to compete for playing time at free safety with rookie Landon Collins and veterans Cooper Taylor and Nat Berhe.
