Customs: Suspect Arrested At JFK After Trying To Smuggle Heroin In Underwear

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A man has been arrested after authorities said he tried to smuggle drugs into the U.S. by hiding nearly two pounds of heroin in his underwear.

It happened back on April 1 at John F. Kennedy Airport.

Authorities said Bernard Charles was acting nervously while his bags were being inspected by Customs officers after arriving at JFK on a flight from Trinidad.

He was then taken to a private search room where Customs officers found two, clear packages in Charles' groin area, authorities said. The packages contained a brown paste-like substance that tested positive for heroin, authorities said.

In all, 1.79 pounds of heroin was seized, which has an approximate street value of more than $70,000, authorities said.

Charles was arrested and turned over to Homeland Security Investigations and faces federal narcotics smuggling charges.
