Mayor Bill de Blasio made the announcement while visiting a group of 11th-grade students at Franklin Delano Roosevelt High School in Brooklyn on Monday.

"We are going to open the door much wider for kids who want to go to college," de Blasio said.

Under the new rule, eligible students will be able to waive fees for up to six CUNY applications.

Officials say the measure will allow children and their families a mindset that college is possible.

"I'm focused on being the first person in my family to graduate college," one student told 1010 WINS' Juliet Papa.

According to de Blasio, the new measure is expected to help roughly 37,000 students looking to apply for college.
