CT Lawmaker Opposes Electronic Tolling As A Way To Ease I-95 Congestion

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A leading transportation committee lawmaker in Connecticut says electronic tolls are not the answer to reducing traffic congestion on Interstate 95.

As WCBS 880's Connecticut Bureau Chief Fran Schneidau reported Thursday, state Rep. David Scribner is convinced electronic tolling won't solve the congestion on I-95.

Scribner, a ranking member of the Legislature's transportation committee, said highway tolls, no matter how they are collected, are not the answer.

"There's varying forms of congestion management, which includes staggering times of heavy volume commuting," the lawmaker said.

Electronic tolling, however, drew solid support from several experts at a forum in Bridgeport earlier this week on ways to ease highway congestion.

Some experts did note that Connecticut motorists paying those tolls would need to be assured the money will be used for transportation improvements and not wind up as a means of balancing the state budget.
