CT Woman Accused Of Running Unlicensed Daycare Pleads Not Guilty In 4-Month-Old's Death

FAIRFIELD, Conn. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A Connecticut woman who ran an unlicensed daycare and is charged in connection with an infant's death purchased 90 bottles of children's Benadryl over a three year span, police say.

Fifty-three-year-old Carol Cardillo, of Fairfield, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges including second-degree manslaughter.

Police said 4-month-old Adam Seagull was found unresponsive at Cardillo's home in March and may have been given the antihistamine, which isn't for children under 2. Officials ruled the death a homicide and determined the cause to be acute diphenhydramine intoxication.

An arrest warrant showed Cardillo made the Benadryl purchases on a CVS card between 2013 and 2016 when her home daycare was open.

Police said Cardillo's attorney told detectives his client told him that she didn't have the medication in her house.

Cardillo's attorney didn't comment Tuesday.
