Deadly crash snarls traffic on Cross Bronx for morning commute

NEW YORK -- A deadly crash stalled traffic on Cross Bronx Expressway and the George Washington Bridge for the Friday morning commute.

Drivers faced upwards of 90-minute delays, as the eastbound lanes were closed for several hours at Jerome Avenue.

Police said an SUV rear-ended a tractor-trailer that had slowed down shortly before 2 a.m.

The SUV driver was rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He was identified as 38-year-old Richard Edwards, of Hempstead.

Police said the tractor-trailer driver stayed on the scene, and no charges were filed.

Drivers heading into Manhattan from New Jersey were advised to take the Holland or Lincoln tunnels. Trucks headed to New England should use the Gov. Mario M. Cuomo Bridge.
