Couple Seeks Good Samaritan Who Helped Deliver Baby On NYC Street
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A New York City couple is in search of a woman who they say helped the mother after she ended up giving birth on an Upper East Side street earlier this week.
Polly McCourt was in labor on Monday and trying to get to the hospital when she realized her little bundle of joy would not wait until she could get there.
McCourt wound up giving birth to her daughter right on the crosswalk at East 68th Street and 3rd Avenue as passersby stopped to offer any help they could, 1010 WINS' Juliet Papa reported.
As McCourt and her husband were taking little Ila home from the hospital on Wednesday, she told Papa she was so focused on giving birth that she didn't realize there were so many people who offered to help.
The mother said she did remember a woman named Isabel who offered her coat in an effort to keep them warm.
"And she was freezing. It's like this weather and she had a short sleeve white T-shirt on and that's one thing I can remember," McCourt said.
The couple was so moved by her offering that they named their child Ila Isabel, after the good Samaritan.
They said so many people stopped to help and they want to thank all of them.
"Although Isabel gave me her coat, there was a number of bystanders that were absolutely amazing. Thank you to all of them. And they gave me their sweaters and their scarves," McCourt said.
The McCourt's doorman, Anton Rudovic, stayed with Polly through the entire ordeal.
"Thank God she's alright and baby, she's fine," Rudovic said.
The couple said once they get home and settled, they hope to find Isabel and thank her.
