Councilman: New High-Rises Are Leaving Central Park In Shadows

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The image of Central Park under dark shadows has been intimidating for more than a century – Charles Ives even composed a menacing chamber music piece called "Central Park in the Dark" in 1906.

Now, a city councilman is taking action in the wake of some new construction that is making Central Park dark even in daylight.

Some residents have complained about new luxury skyscrapers that have cast long shadows over Central Park.

Councilman Mark Levine (D-7th) is proposing forming a task force that would monitor the height of buildings near Central Park and all other city parks.

But the bill is expected to face opposition from the real estate industry.
