Cops: Hit-And-Run Driver Critically Injured Pedestrian In Patchogue

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A Patchogue man was critically injured by a hit-and-run driver early Sunday morning, police said.

Walter Orlando Matute Penaranda, 24, was crossing Montauk Highway east of Bay Avenue around 4:20 a.m. when he was struck by a vehicle, according to authorities. Police described the car as a gray or silver two-door sedan with a rear spoiler, possible an older-model Honda.

Penaranda was transported to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center, where he underwent surgery and was listed in critical condition.

Witnesses said other vehicles were traveling along the highway and there might be additional witnesses.

The Suffolk County Police Department is asking anyone who may have seen the incident to call 631-852-6555 or anonymously provide a tip to Crime Stoppers 800-220-TIPS.
