Cops: Burglars Hit Empty Greenwich Homes Over Holiday Weekend

UPDATED 12/3/14 09:41 A.M.

GREENWICH, Conn. (CBSNewYork) -- Burglars were busy over the holiday weekend.

Greenwich police said burglars hit four homes over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend and four others over the past month, WCBS 880's Sean Adams reported.

"We believe the homes were targeted by an organized group, that these were not simply crimes of opportunity," said Greenwich Police Lt. Craig Gray. "The homes seem to have been targeted based upon the likelihood that they were unoccupied, but in one instance the homeowner was present."

Suspects forced open doors and windows, and even smashed glass during the burglaries.

Police have stepped up patrols in the area.

"The department is taking the matter very seriously," Gray said.

Authorities are warning residents to be vigilant and call police if they notice anything suspicious.

"We are asking residents to be aware of activity in their neighborhood, as no one knows these areas better," Gray said.

Police say residents should set their lights on timers before going away, have a trusted neighbor stop by to collect the mail, newspapers and packages, and notify police before you leave town, Adams reported.
