Controversy Brews In Asharoken Over Public Beach Access For Federal Aid

ASHAROKEN, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - As the busy summer season approaches, one private beach community on Long Island is dealing with the thorny issue of a trade of public access for public help.

Those living near the Village of Asharoken say the answer is simple.

"If they want federal help, they're going to have to let the rest of the country use their beach," one Northport resident said.

As WCBS 880's Long Island Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs reported, some residents of Asharoken shouted down a plan this week to exchange up to $35 million in federal help to repair their private beaches in exchange for public access to the beaches.

"Don't give away my property!" one homeowner screamed at a village meeting.

Some residents want the money, but don't want to give the access, Xirinachs reported.

"Spoiled people and greed," one man said.

The mayor said the matter will ultimately be decided in a vote.
