Consumer Expert: Use Caution When Paying With Debit, Credit Cards

WALLINGFORD, Conn. (CBSNewYork) -- The holiday shopping season is right around the corner, and consumers should think carefully about how they use debit and credit cards, an expert says.

There are some risks to using your debit or credit card in public places, said Howard Schwartz of the Connecticut Better Business Bureau. Consumers, for example, should be very careful not to place their cards down on counters.

"Consumers should be aware that all someone has to do is come up behind you, if you leave your credit card on the counter, snap a photo of it with a smartphone, and they've got your credit card number, your name and your expiration date," Schwartz told WCBS 880 Connecticut Bureau Chief Fran Schneidau. "Be aware of your surroundings."

Schwartz said buying with your credit card is safer than using your debit card. He notes that a questionable purchase on a credit card statement can be challenged, but if someone gets your debit card PIN they can easily access all the money in your bank account.
