Cons Put New Twist On Old Phone Scam In Wyckoff

WYCKOFF, N.J. (CBSNewYork) - In Wyckoff, there's a new twist to an old scam.

As WCBS 880's Sean Adams reported, phone scammers are getting more sophisticated and convincing. One man nearly fell prey to someone claiming to be with the IRS, Adams reported.

"As soon as he got to the store to buy $3,900 worth of money cards, the store manager recognized this as a scam, convinced the man as such and he didn't buy the cards," Wyckoff Police Chief Benjamin Fox said.

But Fox said the cons then took things a step further.

"These thieves weren't done. They called the man back and they actually spoofed the phone number of the Bergen County Sheriff's Department," he said.

Fox says be skeptical; no government agency or utility will ever call and demand immediate payment via cash cards.
