Connecticut Pol To Propose Electronic Highway Tolls

HARTFORD, Conn. (CBSNewYork) -- A Connecticut lawmaker has begun drafting legislation that would enable electronic tolling on highways.

State Rep. Tony Guerrera told WCBS 880 Connecticut Bureau Chief Fran Schneidau that he believes there are enough votes to pass the bill.

"The amount of revenue that we would generate from this is astronomical," Guerrera said.

The Rocky Hill Democrat said the total would depend on the amount of the tolls and the placement of collection points.

Guerrera said all income from electronic tolls would have to be used strictly for highway reconstruction and repairs.

Lawmakers opposed to the idea note that drivers in Connecticut already pay some of the highest gasoline taxes in the nation.

Experts, however, say a new lucrative source of revenue must be generated if roads and bridges are going to be rebuilt.

Electronic tolls allow drivers passing through collection points to automatically be billed without requiring them to stop.
