Computer System Designed To Cut DMV Wait Times Is Creating Longer Waits In Connecticut

HARTFORD, Conn. (CBSNewYork) -- Across Connecticut, customers are having to wait far longer than ever for service at Department of Motor Vehicles offices.

Last year, the wait time averaged about a half-hour. Today, after the installation of a new computer system designed to speed things up, customers sometimes must wait for hours, WCBS 880 Connecticut Bureau Chief Fran Schneidau reported.

Bill Seymour, spokesman for the Connecticut DMV, said that while everything is being done to shorten the long waits, they're likely to continue at least for a while longer.

"In a couple of weeks, we may have a firmer idea of what's causing the longer waits and then what the remedy to that is," he said.

Seymour said the DMV expected long waits during the computer conversion but did not expect such prolonged wait times.

State Sen. Toni Boucher, R-Wilton, said she's received complaints from customers at the DMV office in Norwalk of wait times as long as three hours.
