GOP Lawmaker: I Don't Want Voters To Automatically Register At Conn. DMV

HARTFORD (CBSNewYork) -- A Connecticut Republican lawmaker is saying no to a proposal that would allow voters to automatically register at the DMV.

State Rep. Gail Lavielle told WCBS 880's Fran Schneidau that the proposal from Secretary of the State Denise Merrill is rife with problems and would simply overwhelm the DMV.

Lavielle is concerned that non-citizens will be registered to vote.

"It could also be your Social Security card, it could also be a phone bill or a utility bill, these are all documents that legal residents who are not citizens have, and the DMV will automatically register you to vote," she told WCBS 880.

Merrill said the state will determine if a person is eligible to vote. She also projected that 400,000 new voters could be added to the state's voter registration rolls.
