Connecticut Beefing Up Power On Metro-North New Haven Line

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (CBSNewYork) -- While keeping the pressure on Metro-North, Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy says his state will install two transformers to replace the aging ones in Cos Cob.

The $10 million project, he said, will prevent the type of catostrophic power failure that occurred last September in Mount Vernon.

Power was knocked out to the entire New Haven line Sept. 25 due to a failed Con Edison feeder cable, and full service was not restored Oct. 7, creating grueling commuters for many.

"Now we want to make sure that nothing like that can happen in Connecticut," Malloy told WCBS 880 Connecticut Bureau Chief Fran Schneidau.

The governor said both transformers, which will double the power supply, are expected to be up and operating by March. He added that to prevent any serious disruption to rail service, the work will be done in stages.

Also, Malloy has scheduled a meeting with incoming MetroNorth President Joe Giulietti, who is set to take office next week.
