Conn. State Sen. Meyer Announces Retirement After 50 Years In Public Service

HARTFORD, Conn. (CBSNewYork) - Connecticut State Sen. Ed Meyer of Guilford has announced he won't seek re-election because he wants to hit the tennis circuit.

As WCBS 880 Connecticut Bureau Chief Fran Schneidau reported, the 79-year-old Meyer is retiring after 5 terms in office. The chair of the environment committee said he and his wife are training to get back into competitive tennis.

"I played in the Men's Tour in the amateur days before Open tennis started in 1968 and my wife Patty Ann actually played on the professional tour in the 1970s and she was ranked as high as 16 in the world," Guilford told Schneidau. "We are really trying to get in better shape and go back and play senior tournament tennis in different parts of the country."

Meyer said he is hoping his good friend Ted Kennedy Jr. will run for the senate seat he's vacating.

For years, Kennedy has been urged to run. Meyer said he expects an announcement from Kennedy in a couple of weeks.

Meyer also spent many years as a New York State legislator. His career in public service began in 1964.
