Conn. Man Charged With Threatening Wife By Stabbing Watermelon

BANTAM, Conn. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- When a Thomastown, Connecticut, woman discovered a watermelon in her kitchen impaled with a butcher knife, she wasted no time calling police.

The woman and her husband, Carmine Cervellino, are going through a divorce and had just returned from police headquarters, where she reported what perceived to be drugs in her husband's toolbox in the home.

Thomastown Police Chief James Campbell said police lodged the second-degree threatening charge after taking the overall situation into account.

"In taking domestic violence very seriously here, we took this information, submitted it in an affidavit, which we're bound to do here in the state," Chief Campbell told WCBS 880 Long Island Bureau Chief Fran Schneidau.

Cervellino was formally charged and could face up to a year behind bars if a judge decides his impaling the watermelon was a threatening message he was sending to his wife.
