Conn. Lawmaker Pushes For Right To Free Tap Water At Bars

HARTFORD, Conn. (CBSNewYork) - A lawmaker in Connecticut is fighting a legislative battle on behalf of just one of his constituents, all over glass of tap water.

As WCBS 880 Connecticut Bureau Chief Fran Schneidau reported, State Rep. Chris Wright (D-Bristol) has introduced a measure to fight for the right of one of his constituents to be able to order a plain glass of water at a bar.

Wright said his constituent serves as the designated driver for his friends who drink.

Most bars require the man to buy a bottle of water, instead of just filling a glass for no charge.

"I think anything we can do to promote safe driving and have as few people on the roads who have been drinking as we can, I think that it's a minor thing," Wright told Schneidau. "As a way to promote designated driving if somebody's willing to do that, I think the least that we can do is let them have a glass of water."

Wright said it's not a crucial piece of legislation, but should be put on the books.
