Complaints Force Huntington To Put Parking Meter Fees In Reverse

HUNTINGTON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Officials in Huntington, Long Island, are readjusting their parking meter fees after an outcry from residents and businesses.

As WCBS 880's Monica Miller reported, some people complained about the two-month-old, $1-an-hour parking meter fees along Main Street and New York Avenue.

Previously, drivers could pay 25 cents for 15 minutes. Under the current fees, the hourly rate cannot be prorated.

"It kills us," she Kristin, the manager at Ideal Cheese and Wine Cafe. "It's been a little bit slower.

"At the bar, people are complaining that it's ridiculous that they have to pay that. They would understand if they were doing that to pay a parking lot, but just for the town, they think that's stupid."

This week, town officials sent a letter to those who complained, saying they're readjusting the meter fees for those who pay in cash. The meters are expected to be reprogrammed some time next week.
