Community Weighs In On Possible Casino Near Woodbury Common Premium Outlets

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Many residents in Orange County are apparently in support of a possible Las Vegas-style casino near the Woodbury Common Premium Outlets.

As WCBS 880's Sean Adams reported, a Caesar's Casino proposed just down the road from Woodbury Commons near the Harriman train station had plenty of support at a second public hearing on Monday night.

Folks were excited about the promise of jobs, possible road improvements and tax revenue -- possibly $29 million a year.

But at a local bus stop Tuesday morning, many offered Adams the other side of the casino coin.

"They always say taxes will go down. I've never seen taxes go down," one woman said.

Memorial Day, Black Thursday, there's gridlock all the way up the mountain, down the thruway. If you build a casino here and don't deal with the traffic issues, forget about it. The people who live here can't actually get anywhere," said one man.

"It'll bring up a worse atmosphere. You're gonna get more drugs and stuff like that," another man added.

New York state might grant one or two licenses in the region, just a stones throw away from the New Jersey state line.

Local boards would have to give their blessing. The town and village might vote on the issue in the coming weeks.
