Colon To Pitch For Mets On Sunday Before Burying His Mother In Dominican Republic
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Bartolo Colon feels a sense of duty during a trying time for him personally.
At his own request, the 41-year-old right-hander will come off the bereavement list on Sunday to start against the Dodgers in Los Angeles. He will then return to the Dominican Republic to bury his mother, who passed away on Monday.
"He wants to pitch on Sunday," manager Terry Collins told Newsday. "He feels terrible about what happened the other day. Of course, we've all explained to him, 'You did what you should have done.'"
Adriana Colon died on Monday at the age of 63 following a long battle with breast cancer.
Bartolo Colon is 11-10 with a 3.85 ERA on the season.
The Mets, who had the day off Thursday, completed a two-game series in Oakland with an 8-5 win on Wednesday.
Left-hander Jonathan Niese is expected to start against the Dodgers' Dan Haren in Friday's opener.
