College Student From LI Dies After Being Hit By Car In Bridgeport

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A student at Sacred Heart University was struck and killed by a car while crossing the street in Bridgeport.

Police said 20-year-old Kaitlyn Doorhy, a junior from Mattituck, New York, was hit on Friday at around 12:30 p.m.

A spokeswoman for Saint Vincent Medical Center said Saturday that Doorhy's parents had given permission to confirm the death of their daughter. Her organs are being donated for transplant.

Bridgeport police spokesman William Kaempffer said in a statement that Doorhy was crossing Madison Avenue behind another woman, and that a preliminary investigation found the driver swerved to avoid hitting the other woman and struck Doorhy.

No charges have been filed against the driver of the car.

Doorhy was majoring in political science and belonged to the Kappa Delta sorority.

University president John Petillo said on the school's website a memorial service would be held on campus next week and counseling was being offered to the community.
