New Jersey Lawmaker Wants To Tighten Drone Regulations

TRENTON, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A New Jersey lawmaker is looking to tighten regulations on the use of drones in the state.

State Sen. Richard Codey is introducing bills requiring drones sold in New Jersey be equipped with geo-fencing technology to keep them from flying above 500 feet and from restricted air space.

"I don't want them flying over my house and I don't think you want them flying over your house," the former governor told WCBS 880's Levon Putney. "It's time to regulate these things."

The bill would also require sellers give customers notices featuring the FAA regulations on drone use.

Codey said it is a public safety and homeland security issue.

"We're in a new world since 9/11 and technology has changed dramatically in the last decade," Codey said.

The proposal comes in the wake of a drone crash during a US Open match, another in the football stadium at the University of Kentucky and recent drone sightings near Newark Liberty Airport.
