Coast Guard, Good Samaritan Rescue 5 People After Boats Collide Near Shinnecock

SHINNECOCK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Coast Guard crews and a good Samaritan rescued five people after two boats collided in the waters off Long Island.

The collision occurred between the fishing boat, Elizabeth J, and pleasure craft, the Nina Marie, about 17 miles south of Shinnecock around 10 a.m. Sunday.

A person from the Elizabeth J ended up in the water as a result of the collision and was quickly rescued by the Nina Marie, which then started taking on water, the Coast Guard said.

All of the boaters put on their life jackets and got into a life raft. They were then picked up by a good Samaritan in the fishing vessel Adventuress, before the Coast Guard brought them back to shore.

No serious injuries were reported.

"Contacting the Coast Guard immediately and having the proper safety gear aboard their vessels is what greatly contributed to the success of this case," said Coast Guard Lt. j.g. Martin Betts. "Wearing a life jacket at all times while on the water is one of the most important things boaters can do to keep themselves safe."

The Elizabeth J had completely sunk, and the Nina Marie was capsized and partially submerged, the Coast Guard said. Crews will attempt to recover the Nina Marie.

The cause of the collision is under investigation.
