CL&P: Upgrades Have Made System More Resilient

BERLIN, Conn. (CBSNewYork) -- For the past couple of years, Connecticut Light & Power has been making $300 million worth of improvements -- upgrades that could pay off as snow heads to the area this week.

Among the systemwide improvements, the utility has performed extensive tree trimming, CL&P spokesman Mitch Gross said.

"Since we started in 2013, the company estimates that this approach has resulted in a 58 percent reduction in tree-related outages across our system," Gross told WCBS 880 Connecticut Bureau Chief Fran Schneidau.

Gross added the system also has seen "new and stronger poles, wires, transformers, numerous upgrades to substations."

Gross said the improvements will continue systemwide through 2017.

He added that CL&P is encouraging customers to do what they can to prepare for the snow, which includes restocking storm kits.
