DA: Cliffside Park, N.J. Man Admits To Running Major Drug Ring
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A Cliffside Park, New Jersey man has admitted to being the leader of a major drug trafficking gang that moved large quantities of cocaine throughout Manhattan, the Bronx and New Jersey.
The Manhattan District Attorney's office said Wednesday that Angel Alvarez, 28, pleaded guilty to operating as a major trafficker, criminal possession of a controlled substance, conspiracy and money laundering.
Prosecutors say the criminal activity lasted from July 2012 to March 2015. They say Alvarez acquired a number of luxury vehicles – including an Audi A47, a Mercedes Benz, and a BMW to transport the large quantities of cocaine and maintained a supply of disposable cellphones for ring members.
Alvarez also funneled the proceeds of the narcotics operation through financial institutions, the DA's office said in a news release.
Alvarez also pleaded guilty to endangering the welfare of a child for selling cocaine in front of his 4-year-old son, the news release said.
Alvarez is expected to be sentenced July 28.
