City Of Stamford Looking To Shift Legal Liability In Sidewalk Slip-And-Fall Lawsuits

STAMFORD, Conn. (CBSNewYork) - The City of Stamford wants to shift legal liability in slip-and-fall lawsuits so that the city can't be sued.

The message from the city to property owners: clear your sidewalks of snow, and if somebody falls and is injured, they will not be able to sue the city.

As WCBS 880's Connecticut Bureau Chief Fran Schneidau reported, local law states that property owners must remove snow, but it does not specifically address the liability issue. Therefore, any injured person can sue not only the property owner, but the city as well.

Mayor David Martin wants to put the onus of legal responsibility directly on the property owner so that suing the city is not an option.
