NJ Gov. Christie & Wife Have Lunch With President Trump

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie went to Washington Tuesday for lunch with President Donald Trump.

Christie and his wife, Mary Pat, had lunch with the president.

The White House said Trump and Christie spoke about combating drug use.

"The president then had lunch with New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and his wife regarding combating drug use," White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer said in his daily briefing.

However, sources tell CBS News the president and governor had a serious talk about how the White House is and is not working. Sources said there may be a role for Christie in the administration going forward, something that was generally explored during their lunch.

Trump will have to pick a new national security adviser after the sudden resignation of Michael Flynn just 22 days into the job.

On his radio show Monday night, Christie didn't say if the lunch was going to be a social or a business meeting.

"It would not surprise me at all to spend an hour with him socializing and talking about our families and life in general," Christie said. "If he wants to talk about certain business or get my input on anything, he's never been shy to ask, and if he asks, I'll offer."

The governor also joked that it was a great Valentine's Day gift for his wife.
