Chrissy Teigen Castigated For Going Out 10 Days After Baby Is Born; New Moms Speak Out

SECAUCUS, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Model Chrissy Teigen was under fire Monday night, after she was seen out on the town with her husband just over a week after the birth of their daughter.

As CBS2's Tracee Carrasco reported, Teigen stepped out with her husband, musician John Legend, this past weekend -- just 10 days after giving birth to daughter Luna Simone. It was the first-time parents' date night, and it ignited an Internet backlash.

Many comments on social media criticized Teigen for going out so soon.

"I would never leave my baby after a week," one Instagram user said. "Some folks just don't get it!"

"Poor Luna," another said.

"Spend bonding time with your baby and not let the nanny or babysitter raise them," a third said.

Teigen responded on Twitter: "I went to dinner. People are pissed. Good morning!"

Many new moms who spoke to CBS2 backed Teigen up, saying people need to realize that new moms need a break too.

"I don't think she was a bad mom," said Reina Gonzalez. "I just feel like she wanted to go out and it's not like she left the baby with a random person."

"I just birthed a baby 24 days ago and I came out here, without the baby, baby with my mom," said Hannah Hall. "So sometimes you need time by yourself."

But some questioned whether Teigen's date was appropriate.

"If she feels comfortable that she could leave her baby after two weeks, that's up to her, but for me that's definitely too soon," said Dina Elbaradi.

Psychotherapist and parenting coach Carolyn Meyer-Wartels agreed that Teigen should not be judged.

"I think the last thing in the world a new mom needs is a lot of judgment from others on how they're doing it," she said.

Meyer-Wartels said Teigen's one night out doesn't reflect the bond she shares with her daughter.

"I think it's taking a look at a very small snapshot of her," she said. "It doesn't sound fair at all, because the quality of the bonding can be incredible."

Meyer-Wartels noted that happy moms equal happy babies.
