Police: Man Attacks Woman In Chinatown With Metal Object
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - Chinatown residents are on edge after a woman was attacked in the street Tuesday morning.
Just before 5 a.m. a woman in her 40s was sitting outside a closed produce store on Mott Street off Grand Street.
The woman was talking on the phone with her husband when an unknown man approached her and hit her on the back with a sharp metal object, cutting her, police said. The suspect then ran off.
The weapon hasn't been recovered.
Resident Amy Soh told CBS2's Hazel Sanchez she was shocked when she heard about the attack next to her Mott Street salon.
"I think this is the first time. This neighborhood is very good," Soh said.
Locals were surprised to arrive at work and see police and a command center set up outside their doors.
Mott Street is a bustling marketplace after 8 a.m., but before businesses open, it's a ghost town, Sanchez reported.
Soh told Sanchez she won't be walking to or from work alone for now because of the assault.
"We are very nervous right now, because it's not safe right now," Soh said.
Police are reviewing surveillance footage from surrounding shops, hoping to get a clear picture of the attacker, Sanchez reported.
The victim is in stable condition and is expected to recover.
