Children In Need Get Christmas Shopping Spree Thanks To Nassau County Police

HEWLETT, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Christmas came early to more than a hundred children in need on Long Island thanks to some police officers.

The Nassau County Police Department teamed up with Matty's Toy Shop in Hewlett Thursday to host a shopping spree for 114 families in need.

"This is a no-brainer. I mean giving back to those who otherwise might not have a great day, it warms the heart," Police Benevolent Association President James Carver told 1010 WINS' Roger Stern.

Children were each given $110 as they raced through the store's aisles picking out gifts.

"I'm happy to get these toys for Christmas cause it's cool," one young girl said.

"For me, mostly it's just to see them smile," the girl's mother said. "That's what I'm really thankful for, I'm happy to see them smile."

"It's been a rough year, a rough two years and without this, I would not be able to give my kids Christmas," another mother said.

The Nassau County Police Benevolent Association, the Nassau County Police Foundation and Matty's Toy Stop all helped sponsor the event.
